Tooling Project Engineer

Summary:  The Tooling Project Engineer provides Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Computer-Aided Machining Programming (CAM), and 3D modeling and surfacing to the Tool and Die repair, Maintenance, Quality, Program Management, and Estimating Departments. This role will be responsible for the design of a wide variety of tools and components consistent with cutting and forming tools, fixtures, and gages. Minimum Requirements   Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Design customer and internal driven changes and improvements to tooling and fixtures, may include reverse engineering replacement tooling components from CMM scan data when no original design data is available as well as 3D modeling and surfacing of part form from customer data and part prints. Assist Tooling Launch Coordinator and or Program Managers with Die Reviews for new tooling and programs. Create detailed drawings of tooling components using standard drafting, machining, and tool making practices. Provide 2-axis and 3-axis programming for CNC machining centers and Wire EDM machines, and troubleshoot operators manually written programs. Communicate with outside machining vendors to determine their CAD needs and relay areas of particular importance or general specifications of components being machined. Maintain database and archive of available active and legacy tool designs and NC programs. Administrate and troubleshoot hardware and software on the Machining Department computer workstations, DNC computers, and CNC controllers. Communicate with CAD/CAM software vendors for updates and license renewal of software. For Die Repair- Schedule machining personnel for implementation of new and replacement tooling to current tools of production. Assist and troubleshoot problematic tooling for production and provide solutions from design to implementation for such. For machining- Schedule replacement tooling work schedule and set priorities for completion. Provide the Tooling Manager with time frame for various stages of completion and time line for implementation into the tool. Determine scope of work and assist in vendor required repairs. Assist and support tool room with day to day activities. Assign duties and responsibilities for tooling group. Take part in die repair reviews and discipline when needed. Provide feedback on die status to Tooling Leads and Production Supervisors For Apprenticeship Program Coordinate all functions of machining for tool and die apprentices Machining skills from sawing stock to CNC and wire EDM Die repair skills from changeover technique to implementation of new tooling Develop training schedule and report progress to Tooling Manager Integrate candidates into tool and die repair Education and/or Experience                                            H.S. Diploma required (advanced degreepreferred) Minimum 3 years related experience 6 years' experience with tool designs for metal stamping Experience in die building, CNC and wire EDM programming Skills and Abilities Ability to create detailed drawings; Unigraphics NX Design for metal stamping tooling
